Trees indigenous to the coast of southern Arabia are harvested to provide the fragrant resins that form frankincense and myrrh. The barks are pierced and the juice which naturally exudes forms glistening 'tears' that harden when exposed to air. Resins of frankincense are milky white and those of myrrh are reddish brown. They have been widely used since ancient times in cermonial and religious rites, and for cosmetic and medicinal purposes. Their special value in perfumery and as incense continues to this day.
